Why preview a thumbnail among other videos
A thumbnail is never seen alone. On the home page it sits in a grid, in search it sits next to a long title and description, and in the up-next column it's barely wider than a thumb. Text that reads well full size can turn into a blur at 168 pixels, and a colour that pops on its own can disappear next to five other bright thumbnails.
Add a few thumbnails from your niche as comparison images to see whether yours is the one the eye lands on. The other cards in the grid are neutral placeholders.
02
Thumbnail size and format
YouTube asks for an image at least 640 pixels wide, ideally 16:9 for videos (9:16 for Shorts), in JPG or PNG. The file size limit depends on where you upload it: 2 MB from the mobile app, 50 MB on desktop. 1280 × 720 is the most common safe choice and stays well under 2 MB as a JPG.

What the title preview shows
Most layouts show the title on up to two lines and cut the rest. The preview cuts it the same way, so you can check that the important words come first. The length of the cut line depends on the viewer's screen, so treat it as a guide rather than an exact character count.

The size, aspect ratio and format checks follow YouTube Help; the 100 character title limit comes from the YouTube Data API. The grid is a neutral layout inspired by how video sites arrange results, not a copy of YouTube's interface, and line breaks depend on the screen. Your images are processed in your browser.
