01
How the thread is split
The maker keeps your thoughts together. It first tries to fit whole paragraphs into a post, then whole sentences, and only then single words. A word longer than a whole post is the only thing it cuts mid-word. Links are never split: X counts any link as 23 characters.
Want a break somewhere specific? Put three dashes (---) on their own line and the next post starts there.
02
Counted the way X counts
X's 280-character limit is weighted: most letters count 1, each emoji and CJK character 2, and every link 23, however long. The maker measures every post with these rules, and when numbering is on it reserves room for the "1/5" at the end before splitting, so the number never pushes a post over.
03
Make the first post do the work
Most readers decide on the first post. Say what the thread gives them and why it's worth the scroll, and keep it short enough that it isn't cut in the timeline. The numbering helps readers see how long the thread is before they start.
Posting the same idea to LinkedIn or Threads too? Our character counter shows each platform's limit for the same text.
Sources and methodology
Numbers checked on October 17, 2026.
Lengths follow X's developer documentation (280 weighted characters; links 23; emoji and CJK 2). Bare domains are recognised by common endings, close to X's rule but not its full list. Splitting runs in your browser; your text isn't sent anywhere.
