YouTube monetization requirements depend on the feature and the date. Early access to fan funding differs from ad revenue sharing. The current thresholds and the changes announced for February 1, 2027 are shown separately below; reaching a threshold still requires channel review and the relevant terms.
Current requirements: early access versus ad sharing
The following comparison uses YouTube's expanded YPP overview and main YPP eligibility page, read October 18, 2026. Early access applies in supported countries and individual features have additional requirements.
Path | Subscribers | Activity requirement | Either audience threshold |
|---|---|---|---|
Expanded YPP: fan funding and Shopping | 500 | 3 valid public uploads in 90 days | 3,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months OR 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days |
Current ads and Premium entry | 1,000 | Channel and policy requirements below | 4,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months OR 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days |
Sources and date for every threshold in this table: YouTube Help pages linked above, October 18, 2026. Earlier entry does not by itself unlock the ad-sharing tier.
The YouTube earnings calculator explores revenue scenarios. Its model estimates earnings from supplied views and other inputs; it does not access Studio, review your content or certify YPP membership. Resolve eligibility before using a modeled revenue figure in a spending decision.
What is announced for February 2027?
The YouTube announcement of August 10, 2026, checked October 18, 2026, separates new-entry requirements from ongoing Shorts earnings. Its new-creator ads and Premium threshold is 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days OR 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. It says this entry update does not affect creators already in YPP and that fan-funding and Shopping entry thresholds remain unchanged.
The announcement does not restate a new subscriber number alongside those future audience thresholds. We do not infer a replacement subscriber rule from that omission. Recheck the dated announcement and your Studio terms before applying under the future rules.
For ongoing Shorts ad and Premium sharing, the announcement sets a 10 million qualified Shorts-view threshold over 90 days from February 1, 2027. Channels below it remain in YPP and can continue earning on long-form content; Shorts sharing resumes when the threshold is crossed again.
The Shorts monetization policy, checked October 18, 2026, specifies the measurement: the 90-day period ends on the 15th of the preceding calendar month. That page also repeats the threshold without a date elsewhere; its explicitly dated section and the announcement identify the February 1, 2027 start. Do not confuse this ongoing Shorts test with new YPP entry.
The main eligibility page, checked October 18, 2026, asks existing partners to accept updated terms by January 31, 2027. Record the terms notice separately from your growth target.
Check your channel beyond the counters
YouTube's main eligibility page requires policy compliance, a supported country, no active Community Guidelines strikes, account 2-Step Verification, advanced features access, and an active linked AdSense for YouTube account or readiness to set one up in Studio. Review considers the channel as a whole; crossing the numerical line does not guarantee acceptance. Source: YouTube Help, checked October 18, 2026.
In YouTube's channel monetization policies, checked October 18, 2026, original contribution and substantive variation matter. Reused content and generic or mass-produced content can fail monetization review. Permission to use source material does not automatically settle the separate reused-content test.
Build a small review record: the source footage, your script or research, what you added, and the rights you hold. For an ongoing series, describe what makes each episode useful on its own. This is an editorial preparation method, not a promise that a reviewer will approve the channel.
Use the right views and watch time
The main YPP eligibility page says Shorts Feed watch time does not count toward the long-form watch-hour route. Its exclusions include private, unlisted and deleted videos and ad-campaign watch time. The Shorts route uses qualified views of public Shorts in the Shorts Feed. Source: YouTube Help, checked October 18, 2026.
Example: a fictional creator sees public Shorts views growing while the long-form eligibility bar stays still. The first question is whether they are comparing different paths. Log which counter they read, its time window and the upload types behind it. Do not add those counters together into a made-up combined requirement.
A repurposing plan for your original material can support both formats, but give each version a clear purpose. Track the metric that answers the actual question: audience discovery, YPP progress and earned revenue need different measurements.
After approval, check the feature terms
YouTube's monetization module guide, checked October 18, 2026, explains the feature-specific modules in Studio. Watch Page monetization, Shorts monetization and commerce features have their own terms. Being a partner does not mean every available feature is already enabled.
The Shorts policy states that eligible Shorts sharing begins when you accept its module; earlier views are not retroactively eligible. Source: YouTube Help Shorts monetization policies, checked October 18, 2026. An ad appearing on a video is not proof that the channel earned a share.
Next, write down your intended feature, the applicable date, your Studio progress and any unfinished account steps. Apply when Studio offers the path and the requirements are satisfied. We did not submit a YPP application, inspect a private channel or verify anyone's eventual approval for this article.
