YouTube upload capacity is no longer calculated by dividing the general daily quota by an old upload cost. As checked on 2026-10-17, the official API reference gives video uploads their own default allowance: 100 calls per day, charged at 1 unit each in the Video Uploads bucket. Check the actual quota assigned to your Google Cloud project before promising delivery capacity.
For the wider workflow, start with preparing one video for Shorts, TikTok and Reels. This article concerns API capacity after you have suitable media, rather than the media specifications themselves.
Use the current quota buckets
The YouTube Data API overview, checked 2026-10-17, documents separate default daily allowances: 100 video-upload calls, 100 search calls and 10,000 units for other endpoints. These are project budgets, not an allowance multiplied by every connected channel.
The quota calculator, checked 2026-10-17, says daily quotas reset at midnight Pacific Time. A scheduler operating in another timezone should not equate its own calendar boundary with Google's reset.
Old cost examples need a date. The official revision history records an upload-cost reduction from approximately 1,600 to approximately 100 units on 2025-12-04, followed by separate upload and search buckets on 2026-06-01. Applying either historical upload cost to today's general budget produces the wrong capacity model.
Count the operations around an upload
Our uploader review on 2026-10-17 found a videos.insert call followed by thumbnails.set when a thumbnail path is supplied. Those are separate operations. The quota calculator lists a thumbnail update at 50 units and a videos.list read at 1 unit, checked 2026-10-17. Both belong to the other-endpoint budget rather than the Video Uploads bucket.
Illustrative operation | Calls | Budget used |
|---|---|---|
Insert videos | 75 | 75 upload units |
Set a thumbnail for each | 75 | 3,750 other-endpoint units |
Read each video's status once | 75 | 75 other-endpoint units |
This illustration was calculated and asserted with Node.js on 2026-10-17. Starting with unused default budgets leaves 25 upload units and 6,175 other-endpoint units: the latter calculation is 10,000 minus 3,825. It excludes retries, additional reads and unrelated project traffic. It is arithmetic for planning, not a measurement of a live project's remaining quota or a guarantee that every upload will succeed.
Keep product limits separate from Google quota
The implementation review found workspace API request limits in Uplonic's rate-limit middleware. Those count requests to our application. They do not establish how many YouTube upload units remain in Google's project.
The publishing quota gate reviewed for this article implements Instagram-specific checks; it does not query a YouTube quota counter. We therefore cannot promise a live YouTube remaining-quota display or automatic reservation of Google's upload allowance. For the authoritative assigned limits and usage, inspect your project's quota information in Google Cloud.
The YouTube publishing channel provides the product context. Validate the media separately with the video specification checker; passing that check does not reserve quota.
Read the error before deciding to retry
The videos.insert reference, checked 2026-10-17, includes uploadLimitExceeded for a user who has uploaded too many videos. Do not infer that this necessarily identifies an exhausted project bucket. A channel restriction and a project quota problem need different investigation.
Our uploader preserves Google's machine-readable reason when wrapping an insertion failure. The local error taxonomy groups quota and rate-limit reasons for retry policy, but that grouping does not prove which external allowance was reached or when a channel restriction will clear. Keep the original reason, operation and destination account in your diagnosis.
A failed thumbnail operation is also different from a failed video insertion. In the reviewed uploader, a thumbnail error is logged after the video has already been created. Re-uploading the video to repair its thumbnail could create another video. Confirm the existing result before starting another insertion after any uncertain response.
Plan capacity from the project you actually operate
Inventory uploads, thumbnail changes, metadata writes and status reads separately. Compare those estimates with the project's assigned limits and observed usage. Leave room for other traffic rather than treating a theoretical maximum as a queue-completion promise.
Google's quota and compliance audit guidance, checked 2026-10-17, describes the process for requesting additional quota. This article does not establish Uplonic's assigned Google quotas, any audit outcome or a live upload throughput measurement. Those require access to the relevant project and an authorized operational test.
